In short

An internationally validated assessment and treatment system that uses repeated movements to classify pain and find a directional preference the patient can use to self-manage.

Key benefits

  • Rapid clarity on what is driving your pain, often within the first session.
  • A specific movement you can use at home to reduce or centralise symptoms.
  • Less reliance on hands-on therapy — you become your own best treatment.

Who it's for

  • People with back or neck pain, sciatica or referred limb symptoms.
  • Patients with recurring flare-ups who want tools to self-manage.
  • Anyone who has been told their scan looks bad but wants a mechanical solution first.

Conditions Flora treats with McKenzie MDT Credentialed

  • Low back pain and lumbar disc issues
  • Neck pain and cervical radiculopathy
  • Sciatica and referred leg pain
  • Recurring joint pain in the extremities

How Flora uses this in your treatment

For most spine and joint pain, Flora runs a full MDT assessment on the first visit — repeated movements in specific directions to classify the pain and find what reduces or centralises it.

Once a directional preference is identified, that movement becomes your homework: something you can do at home, at your desk or on the road to keep symptoms under control between sessions.

This is why McKenzie patients often need fewer visits than expected — the goal is independence, not dependence on the therapist.

Full detail

The McKenzie Method® of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) is an internationally used system for assessing, classifying and treating musculoskeletal pain — especially of the spine, but also of the extremities.

MDT uses repeated movements and sustained positions to identify a directional preference: the specific movement that reduces or centralises pain. Once found, that movement becomes the foundation of the treatment programme, empowering patients to self-manage flare-ups without becoming dependent on hands-on therapy.

Being Credentialed means Flora has passed a rigorous post-graduate exam demonstrating competence in the full MDT process. It is especially powerful for disc-related back and neck pain, sciatica and recurring joint issues.

Frequently asked questions

What conditions does the McKenzie Method treat?
Low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, disc-related symptoms, and many extremity joint problems — anything with a mechanical component that responds to specific, repeated movements.
How many McKenzie sessions will I need?
Most patients see a clear direction within 1–2 sessions and then progress with a home programme. Total course of care is usually shorter than passive, hands-on-only treatment.
Is McKenzie the same as generic back exercises?
No. MDT is a full assessment and classification system. The exercises look simple, but they're chosen based on how your specific pain responds — not from a generic sheet.
What does 'McKenzie Credentialed' mean?
It is a formal post-graduate certification from the McKenzie Institute International, awarded after passing a rigorous theoretical and practical examination in the full MDT process.
